Last weekend, we had the privilege of recognizing three incredible veterans through our Rooftop Giveaways! These veterans, whose service and sacrifice have shaped not only their own lives but also the communities they continue to serve, inspire us with their dedication and resilience. We are honored to share their stories and highlight their unwavering commitment to family, country, and community.
Mark Battaglia: Strength in Service and Resilience
Mark Battaglia’s journey of service began in 1973 when he enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard the USS William M. Wood during critical missions like the Cyprus conflict. The discipline and structure he gained in the military shaped his later success as an entrepreneur, where he applied these skills to build his businesses. Now retired, Mark cherishes time with his children and grandchildren, with the goal of watching them grow up. His resilience is tested by a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, but thanks to modern treatments, he remains stable and hopeful. Mark finds purpose in small acts of kindness, often helping fellow veterans, and draws strength from the unwavering support of his wife and family, facing each challenge with gratitude and determination.
Tom Franz: A Life of Service and Dedication
Tom Franz was drafted into the Army in 1965 and deployed to Vietnam in 1966 with the 1st Infantry Division, the "Big Red One." During the war, he formed close bonds with his comrades, especially Victor Hoyt, whose death in December 1966 left a lasting impact on him. After returning to Ohio in 1967, Tom met his wife, Barbara, and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at 63. He built a successful career at Miami Valley Hospital, eventually retiring as the Associate Director of Environmental Services. Tom also served his community as a substitute teacher and held various local government roles, retiring as Mayor of Englewood, Ohio, in 2024. Reflecting on his life of service, Tom says, “It’s an incredible experience. If you feel called, find something good in your heart for your country.”
Josh Clark: A Lifetime of Service to Country and Community
Josh Clark has dedicated his entire adult life to serving both his country and community. From 1996 to 2000, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed at 29 Palms, CA, and Camp Lejeune, NC. In 1997, he deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Mediterranean, where his unit played a key role in evacuating 2,500 refugees and the U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone, earning a Meritorious Unit Citation and the Humanitarian Service Medal. After his military service, Josh spent 15 years as a law enforcement officer in Halifax County, including two years training the Afghan National Police in Afghanistan. In 2015, he transitioned to education, teaching high school in Roanoke Rapids, NC, for nine years. Currently, he’s completing a Principal Internship at Belmont Elementary School while pursuing his MSA through NC State University’s Principal Fellows program, set to graduate in May 2025. Alongside his career, Josh has shared this journey with his wife, Mandy, of 21 years, and their three children—Delaney, Alex, and Holden.
