Ice dams happen when the top part of your cold roof starts to thaw but the bottom part is still frozen (like on a cold but sunny day). The ice and snow melts, then refreezes as it flows down – creating the ice dam. This can cause leaks and other damage. You can help avoid ice dams by having a properly ventilated and insulated attic!

Windy weather

While you can’t control the weather (wouldn’t that be nice!) you can make sure you head in to each new season with a properly inspected and maintained roof. By replacing missing, loose or damaged shingles, and making sure everything is in tip-top shape, you have a better chance of avoiding issues during windy, winter storms.

Debris

You probably love the trees in your yard, right? We don’t blame you. But, in the winter, snow, ice and winds can cause your lovely trees to damage your roof. Make sure your trees aren’t touching or overhanging your roof and that they are trimmed and pruned. And make sure there isn’t mold or mildew on your roof (yes, you can clean your roof!) so it can be in optimal condition.

Attic condensation

Cold surfaces (in your attic) meeting warm air means you WILL get condensation – and condensation is a fancy word for water, which NO homeowner wants. An attic that isn’t properly ventilated and insulated is prone to condensation, which can lead to mold and mildew – or even leaks. So make sure you have your roof professionally inspected!
